Joan Hutton has been teaching private saxophone and clarinet lessons for over 14 years.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree in music education and performance from Ithaca College and a Master’s degree in performance from the Eastman School of Music.  Joan has been a freelance performer since moving to Minnesota in 1994.  She is a member of the Ancia Saxophone Quartet, the jazz-funk sextet Rare Medium, and has performed on woodwinds for numerous shows at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater.  She has taught at Augsburg College, Winona State University, Concordia University, and MacPhail Center for Music.  Her students have participated in such high-level groups as the Greater Twin Cities Youth Orchestras, Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands, University of Minnesota Honor Bands, All-State Bands and All-State Jazz Band.  Joan has a thorough knowledge of the clarinet and saxophone repertoire from beginning through college levels and is happy to incorporate study of music theory as well as jazz theory and improvisation into lessons.  Lessons are tailored to suit the needs and interests of each student and students are encouraged to explore a variety of musical styles while developing a solid foundation in rhythm, articulation, tone quality, technical facility and intonation.
