Mr. Vang Xiong, DCD SEA

My name is Vang Mong Xiong, although everyone knows by Captain Vang, and I am a Special Education Paraprofessional in the DCD program at Hmong International Academy (HIA). This is my first year with HIA, and I am (and have been) thrilled to be working with your child. Outside of HIA, I am a graduate student at Hamline University, pursuing a teaching degree in Elementary Education K-6. I attended Saint Cloud State University for my undergraduate studies, of which I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology (cultural anthropology emphasis), and two minors in: Ethnic Studies & Human Relationship and Multicultural education.
I have never anticipated that life would wound me up at the doorstep of becoming an educator. The path towards becoming an aspiring teacher primarily thrives from my undergraduate research. Through my work, which was focused on cultural hegemony, cultural discontinuity, the Hmong population, and the model minority concept, I became aware of the importance of education, especially when it comes to bias-free education. I strongly believe that students learn at their best when the various forms of discrimination that are work against students are removed from the educational system, and more importantly, from teaching and learning. I presented my work twice at HIA, and at numerous sites, including at the: MN State Capitol, Central States Anthropological Society Conference, NMA, and SCSU.
I envision myself teaching at school where the student population consists of predominantly Hmong students upon the completion of my master’s degree. After I have taught for a few years, I intend to pursue doctoral studies in Educational Anthropology. My long-term goal is to teach and research at a higher institution, and, in the modest hope, bridge the school culture to the home culture of students from culturally and linguistically diverse background. The challenges up ahead are far from easy, but I am driven, and I have few doubts that my journey will be nothing but a fruitful one.
